#32 Vogue (May 2004)
Photographer Irving Penn captures Nicole Kidmans back profile dressed in a Christian Lacroix oyster satin backless dress for this cover of the May 2004 issue of Vogue. This was the first cover shoot for Vogue by Penn since 1989. The issue contains more photographs of Kidman dressed as a Grecian goddess, an Italian diva and as legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt.
My description: This photo is great. I like how the girls back is to the reader of the magazine. I like how the background contrasts with her dress and what she's wearing. The lighting is also a little dim which makes the picture even better. Her head is tilted and facing towards the side so that gives off an "im sassy" expression of the lady. The title "VOGUE" also contrasts with the picture and the background, tieing the whole cover together.

Magazine Cover Introduction

The cover being emotionally irresistible, glows in vivid colors, if the cover pops out from its background, and making a unique vivid cover.

Lytro Warm-up

1. I saw the photo get clearer and more in focus.
2. It zooms in a little more and puts the picture in focus.
3. The photographer would need to know how to work the ISO setting to get the perfect light for the picture.
4. I don't think its worth it because normal cameras would work betetr for me.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part II AND Rules of Photography Part II

I think tips # 9 and 10 are most important, because being yourself in a self portrait is really important and easy to do, and using props makes the photo more fun to look at.

I like this photo because it's cool how its black and white and only the balloons are colored. I picked this photo because the background is a graveyard and I thought that was cool.

I like this photo because the girl is using props and she's making the picture more interesting. I picked this photo because all the bright colors are entertaining to look at.

I like this photo because it shows rules of thirds. I picked this photo because the dark alley was a cool setting.

I like this photo because the emotion on the girls face is expressed vividly and thoroughly. I picked this photo because the hand shadows make it more interesting.

I like this photo because the clarity and focus is perfect. I picked this photo because the background is blurry and the subject is clear.

I like this photo because the cowboy is in motion. I picked this photo because I think beach pictures are interesting.

I want to shoot my friend Alyssa Rodriguez (freshman) because she used to be a model and she takes really good photos. I want to take pictures outside maybe in the grass or near flowers, in the courtyard or in front of the school by the flower beds. I want to do a couple of closeups and some far away. I want to do rule of thirds photos.

Self portrait

^ This is my favorite self portrait photo

^ This is my favorite professional photo

I think a good photo is a photo with bright lighting. A good photo is also a photo that is clear and in focus. A good photo is at an unusual angle and has a still object as the subject.

I think i'll want to take pictures at a looking up angle, and i'd want to shoot in a non distracting place thats quiet and scenic and has bright light, but not too bright.

Shortlist warm-up

This is my favorite photo from the action and movement category because the sunset behind the dancer is so pretty and shes right in the center of the photo.

This is my favorite photo from the creative license category because Its at a looking up angle, and it looks really cool.
This is my favorite photo from the documentary category because its black and white and the door is on the right side of the photo.

This is my favorite family and friends photo because the city as the background is cool.

This is my favorite fashion photo because her face looks symmetrical.

This is my favorite photo from the gardens and flowers category because its so colorful and bright.

This is my favorite photo from the landscapes section because the green light in the sky relfects off the water to make the photo look cool.
This is my favorite wildlife photo because I love the bright colorful light surrounding the ladybug.

Extra Credit: Dancers

1.      Link the website you visited and make sure your blog is titled the same as I named it on the akinsphotojblog.

2.   I see dancers dancing in front of mirrors and with partners. I also see people getting ready for a performance or setting up for a performance.

3.   I learned that even blurry pictures can be cool pictures, and if you take a picture of a dancer that isnt posing for the camera and is in motion, that's better than a regular posed picture.

(It wouldn't let me post the photos onto my blog.)

Ethics in fashion photography

1. Her face was shifted higher up, her eyes were made bigger, her lips were made bigger, her neck was made skinnier, and her face was made more clear.

2. I don't think its particularly "right" to change the model like that, but if they have to then they have to to promote sales.

3. Yes, it would be bad if they were promoting something negative.

4. Small changes to the face are okay, but making someone skinny or making someone have bigger body parts is wrong.

5. Photojournalism is doing it for school or just for journaling but fashion photography edits are gonna get published for the whole world to see.

6. All the photos that are photoshopped look real and look like they weren't edited, but they really were edited a million different ways, but we would never know, so I guess publishers think its okay if people cant recognize the changes.

National Geographic warm-up and photo manipulation and ethics

1.

2. This is my favorite picture because I think the underwater scenery is pretty. I love underwater pictures also. I think that sea lions are so cute and the ocean is so beautiful.

3. I would take a picture of jellyfish underwater.

A. A person in Iran photoshopped a photo taken on april fools day that was gonna be put in the newspaper. Now people think digital manipulation shouldn't be allowed to be used for bad. News editors found out more people kept photoshopping photos and publishing them. The photots then got manipulated for good.

B. I think that photoshopped photos should be allowed in the newspapers and on the news. I don't think theres anything wrong with changing a few things about a photo.

2. A
I think this is the most unethical because the newspaper should've decided to put someone else on the cover if they had to photoshop a new body on Oprah.

2. B
I think this is the least ethical picture because changing someones teeth isnt as bad as changing their race or changing their body to someone else's body which is completley different from theirs.

Abandoned theme parks

1. I would like to go to Spreepark, Berlin, Germany. The attractions look very bright and colorful. There's also alot of "dinosaurs" at the park, and it would be cool to shoot the animal rides. It also has alot of funny looking rides and things to do.

2.

3. An abandoned house, an abandoned railroad, the black sand beach in Hawaii, the grand canyon, and a wax museum.

4.

5. I think it would be cool to take pictures there because no other beach has black sand in it. Hawaii's beaches are beautiful and you could take really cool angle pictures here. I've been to the black sand beach, and it's so beautiful. It would just be weird to see black sand under the water when you're swimming!

6. I would need all my camera supplies, I would need a plane ticket to Hawaii, I would need directions on how to get to the black sand beach, I would need ALOT of money, and I would need a backup camera incase mine got water or sand in it.

American soldier slideshow and captions

A. The most powerful image in my opinion is the one with all the soldiers lined up, they look ready to fight or ready to go into some intense training.

B. I like the basic training photos because it shows the soldiers working hard.

C. The images work together to show that the soldiers need good, hard training to succeed when they go to war.

Funny captions

This photo is being taken in Bertha's kitchen on a Sunday afternoon, she arranged the puppies into a perfect circle. She tried her hardest to keep the puppies still, but they kept wiggling and yapping.

I took this photo of these dogs in my mothers living room, these are all her dogs. I happened to capture the dogs at the right moment, they were all looking at the camera at the same time, it was hard to get them to do that, but I managed to!

A photographer named Samantha Seals took this photo, she was walking down the busy streets of downtown New York. The man walking this dog was a business worker of hers, and he was on his way to take the found dog to the shelter.

Cool video

The maker of the video could slow the pictures down in the end, and they should add more pictures instead of just music the whole time.

Fixed photo shoot post shoot reflection

1. That the camera is sensitive to light, my photos were taken outside so half of it was bright and the other half was darker.

2. I notice most photos are clear and bright, but some are really dark and blurry.

3. The difference between each ISO is that as the iso gets higher, the pictures get darker.

4. If you have a high ISO you dont need much light but if you have a low ISO you need alot of light.

5. The higher ISO photos are more clear than the low ISO photos.

6.
The ISO is 400

7. I need to concentrate on the shutterspeed and the clearness of the photo.

NEXT ASSIGNMENT

1. Maybe a "colorful" theme, like with a bunch of colorful pictures.

2. Use phones and cameras.

3. I would want to put the mural maybe by the cafeteria, maybe on a wall in the courtyard?

Warm up 10/13/11

1. Use exposure bracketing, then merging them into an HDR image.

2. Canon T3 can shoot bracketing pictures.

3. We could take pictures like this in the cafeteria or in the courtyard.

4.

I picked this photo because it's really pretty and it was taken in Hawaii, and last time I went to Hawaii I loved it. The photographer used simplicity.

GREAT BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHERS PART 3

1. What first caught my attention in Emmit Gowin's photos were how he takes pictures of people doing weird things. I like how he takes alot of pictures of little kids playing and holding their stuffed animals and toys.

2. In the first photo, I see trees. I see lush green grasses. I see a clear blue sky. I smell wood. I smell fertile soil. I smell the smell of a beautiful day. I hear birds chirping within the trees. I hear the trees swaying within the wind. I hear the click of my camera as I take pictures. I taste fresh grass. I taste crunchy leaves. I taste fluffy clouds. I feel rough grass in between my fingers. I feel the warm air hit my body. I feel the presence of tiny animals all around me.
In the second photo I see a baby with flowers around him. I see peoples little hands. I see beautiful roses. I smell dirty diaper. I smell freshly cut flowers. I smell sweaty hands. I hear the rustling of the people trying to place the flowers perfectly around the baby's face. I hear the baby crying. I hear footsteps. I taste baby food. I tast salty tears. I taste skin. I feel smooth baby skin. I feel soft flower petals. I feel people staring at me.

3. I would like to make a power point of some of my photographers photos, descriptions of his photos, and a biography about him.

Sim Cam

F4- 1/125 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background is blurry you can kind of see it, but it's clear that the couple is the subject of the photo.

F5.6- 1/60 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background is getting more visible, but the couple is still the main subject in this photo.

F8- 1/30 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background is way more visible then it was in the first photo. Even though the couple is kind of blurry, the photo itself is light and getting clearer.

F11- 1/60 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background is clear and so is the couple, so the photo looks good with these settings.

F16- 1/30 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background and couple are both clear now, but the photo is a little dark.

F22- 1/15 of a second shutter speed looks the best to me. The background and subject are clear, even though the couple is barely blurry.

The couple at slow shutter speeds get blurrier and blurrier. The photographer could maybe set up a tripod so the surface would be stable to take the photo. I think the lowest shutter speed a photographer cna handle would be 1/60 of a second shutter speed.

ISO

iso 200 ^

iso 3200 ^

1. Because if you want to capture moption in the dark, you should put it a higher iso. If there isn't enough light, you should then increase the iso.

2. He said that everyone should use low iso as much as possible because most of the time, there's going to be enough light to take a good picture.

3. He said that we should only use the high iso to quickly capture a picture in low light, and to freeze motion.

4. 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400.

SHUTTER SPEED

High shutter speed photo ^

Slow shutter speed photo ^

1. At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
A. high shutter speed
B. high shutter speed
C. high shutter speed
D. high shutter speed
E. high shutter speed
F. high shutter speed

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
A. low shutter speed
B. low shutter speed
C. low shutter speed
D. low shutter speed
E. low shutter speed
F. low shutter speed

2. Auto mode, shutter priority mode, or manual mode.
Auto mode- Where the camera automatically sets the shutter speed.
Shutter priority- Where you set the shutter speed yourself and the camera selects the aperture.
Manual mode- Where you set both shutter speed and the aperture by yourself.

3. 30", 25", 20", 15", 13", 10", 8", 6", 5", 4", 3"2, 2"5, 2". 1"6, 1"3, 1", 0"8, 0"6, 0"5, 0"4, 0"3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10, 1/13, 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50, 1/60, 1/80, 1/100, 1/25, 1/60, 1/200, 1/250, 1/320, 1/400, 1/500, 1/640, 1/800, 1/1000, 1/1250, 1/1600, 1/2000, 1/2500, 1/3200, and 1/4000.

APERTURE

                                                                     ^ F2.8 aperture setting
                                                               ^ F20 Aperture setting
1. We should relate our pupils (eyes) to aperture.
2. The smaller the aperture lens, the higher the aperture number.
3. Aperture impacts depth of field because the larger the F number, the more in focus the background images get.
4. F3.5, F4.0, F4.5, F5.0, F5.6, F6.3, F7.1, F8.0, F9.0, F10, F11, F13, F14, F16, F18, F20, F22, F25, and F29.

Africa: Black and White

I liked this powerpoint because the pictures were so cool and interesting. They were really good photos too. My favorite photo was the one with the 2 zebras because it was a clear photo and it was so close up you could see every detail of the zebras.

A. He used a Pentax 67ll with only 2 fixed lenses.
B. His reason for taking the photos is because he fell in love with the animals while directing "Earth Song", a music video for Michael Jackson.
C. His hope for taking these types of photos is because he wants to show the animals they're just like us, and they deserve to be treated just like us. He wants the animals to live because he believes that human or nonhuman, everything has a right to live. He thinks the world is vanishing before his eyes so he wants to try to save everything.
D. "The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes."

Academic shoot reflection

1. It was hard for me to get pictures of the kids because they were being stupid.

2. I was trying to focus on good lighting and good angles for all these photos. I think I got on my knees alot to get good angles for pictures.

3. I would try not to get moving objects or anything in the background of a good photo.

4. I would keep the good angles and the sharpness in the photos.

5. I think the easiest rule for me is lines.

6. I think the hardest rule to capture would be avoiding mergers.

7. I'm still kind of confused about framing and simplicity. I could ask people about the rule or look at other peoples photos.

6 rules photos

Avoiding mergers (bad photo)
I think I followed this rule good.
The subject in this photo is the girl grabbing the calculator.
Its clear to people what the subject is.

Simplicity
I think I followed this rule great!
The subject in this photo is the lady with the green shirt.
It's very clear to people what the subject is in this photo.

Lines
I think I followed this rule really good.
The subject in this photo is the blue railing.
Its clear to people what the subject is in this photo.

Rule of thirds
I think I followed this rule good.
The subject in this photo is the teacher.
It's clear to people what the subject is in this photo.
I could've turned the camera at a different angle.

Framing
I think I followed this rule pretty good.
The subject in this photo is the teacher in the front of the room.
It's clear to people what the subject is in this photo.
I could've got the teacher standing right in the middle of each row.

Balance
I think I followed this rule kind of good.
The subject in this photo is the 3 people on each side of the photo.
It's clear to people what the subjects are in this photo.
I could've gotten 3 people on each side sitting directly behind eachother.
