Runner up video

Name of photographer- Alyssa Schukar

General focus of portfolio- Eating disorders

3 problems that the judges note- Same lens used, each picture has the same emotions shown, and the same distance.

2 things the judges like- The blue and grey background in the alley in the Caribbean photo, and the girl who fell over the hurdle with only the opponents legs showing.

My overall impression- I thought this video was okay, it could’ve been a lot better, the pictures all kind of looked the same and showed the same emotions.  Funky angles and lighting would’ve been better.

Judges strengths- The bowtie picture color and composition, everyone in the basketball picture is doing something, the bubbles picture was cool, photographer is right in the middle of the photos.

What I see as strengths and weaknesses- I like how the photographer got close to his subjects, the background of the football picture is plain and simple, the emotions on the basketball girls faces, too much photo shop on the pitcher picture.

Contest recap video

The process the judges went through to pick a winner- Had to go through everyone’s portfolios and describes the strengths and weaknesses of every photo, describes the stories of the portfolios, and evaluates the comparison of the stories to the photos.

Part 2 individual images

Photo that you agree with judges on and explain why you and the judges do or do not like it- I agree with the judges on the boxing photo in the part 1 category action because I like the action and the referee standing in the background makes the photo even better. The cropping is good and the action is good.

Photo that you don’t agree with the judges on and explain why you think the judges are wrong- I think the 3 baseball squares photo in the part 2 category no pro/ no college was really interesting to look at and there’s different kinds of action in each photo, it’s like a timeline of events happening. I don’t agree with the judges saying it’s boring.

1. What do you think about this project and photo essay?
I think it's interesting because I would've never thought of a photo essay about touching strangers. The way he words things just tie everything together.

2. What would you do if someone approached you with a camera and asked you to participate in a photo shoot and then asked you to touch a stranger?
I would do it, i'm not scared of touching random people, it would be fun to participate in.

3. Think of an unusual photo shoot similar to this one that you think would be fun to go and shoot.
Underwater photoshoots are cool.

4. Finally, tell me what you thought of the photography, did the photographer think about the rules of photography that you know about? What types of photos did he take?
Yes, he used the same rule over and over again, simplicity.

Japan Earthquake

This photo makes me wonder why everything gets so destroyed in earthquakes. This photo makes me scared because that could happen to me one day! This is partially a symmetrical photo.

This photo makes me sad. The womans face is red and you can tell she's crying. This photo is simple, it has a normal background.

This photo makes me happy to see that everyone is safe and sound in blankets. This photo is a merger because some people and their blankets are cut off the picture.

Newspaper notes

• 2 sizes of newspapers, first size is like school newspaper called "broad sheet".
• Other size newspaper is called "tabloid".
• The flag has the name of the paper in it.
• The top photo is called the teaser.
• Folio- W. Charles Akins High School under teaser photo.
• Folio- The title of the newspaper, the date, page #, name of the section, a slogan or motto.
• Headlines need to draw attention, be creative.
• Subheadlines should be below headlines, subheadline gives more details about the story.
• Photo captions have caption headlines, grabs attention, gives inside about the picture, give credit to the photographer, 2 sentences makes a good caption, 1st sentence describes what goes on in the picture (who, what, when, where, why, how) and 2nd sentence is background info about the picture.
• Bi line should have the persons name and the position they are.
• Have to have stories.
• Info graphics, info in graphic form, additional info not in the story, in fun little creative box.
• The table of contents should be on the front page, the volume number and the issue #, and barcode (?)
• The staff box is in every paper, the names of staff and position, organizations we belong to, and the policy is written in the staff box.

Front pages of the world

1. The Oregonian because the title is cool and I love Oregon.
2. My favorite headline is "Sea lions may lose their spot" because it talks about how to save the sea lions and it's so in detail.

4. They all have columns of texts that look very boring.
5. The pictures on the front pages vary from being tall to wide to big to small.
